Genomic tools are designed to analyze the structure, function, and mapping of genomes. The most transformative tool in this category is Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS). Unlike traditional Sanger sequencing, which reads one DNA fragment at a time, NGS uses "massively parallel" processing to sequence millions of fragments simultaneously.
By 2026, the industry has moved toward "Ultra-High Throughput" platforms, such as the Illumina NovaSeq X, which have successfully driven the cost of sequencing a human genome below $100. This affordability has transitioned genomics from a purely research-based endeavor into a routine clinical diagnostic tool. Beyond DNA, genomic tools now focus heavily on Transcriptomics (the study of RNA expression), allowing scientists to see which genes are "turned on" or "off" in response to specific diseases or treatments.
